Accounts
People working with faculty members can get an account on the HEP cluster. This account is only good as long as you are working with the faculty member. Accounts are usually deleted in bulk a few times throughout the year. You will not be given any notice as to when your account will be deleted. If you have files in your account that you want to keep, you should copy them to your own computer. When your account is deleted, your files will be deleted as well.

Mail
We are no longer letting everyone who has an account on hep to use it to receive email. We simply to not have the infrastructure or personel to combat the flood of spam. If you do have a grandfathered account on hep, the setings for the mail server are:

  • Incoming server: hep.uchicago.edu
  • Type of service: imap (port 993) or pop (port 995), but you must say to use SSL or StartTLS
  • Login: your HEP username
  • Outgoing server: hep.uchicago.edu
  • Port: either 25 or 587, again be sure to check SSL or TLS
  • Outgoing server also requires you to login with your username and password

To help combat spam, you can forward your email from hep.uchicago.edu to a UChicago Gmail account. Click here for instructions on how to use a UChicago Gmail account as a spam filter on your hep email.
