Subject: SCGSR 2018 Solicitation 1: The DOE Office of Science Graduate
Student Research (SCGSR) program is now accepting applications!
To: DOE-SCGSR <DOE-SCGSR at orau.org>
Dear SCGSR Awardees and Alumni,
Hope you are doing well at the host DOE laboratory, school, or your new
position.
The Department of Energy’s Office of Science is now accepting applications
for the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program (2018
Solicitation 1). Please see the program announcement below right after my
signature. I would appreciate it very much if you could help spread the
word among interested graduate students, faculty members, and
institutions/communities.
*Please note: starting with 2017 Solicitation 2 cycle, the General Atomics’
DIII-D facility is now an approved new host site for SCGSR program. If you
are interested in pursuing a SCGSR research project in the Fusion Energy
Sciences (FES) areas, please take a look at the relevant information on the
FES areas at*
https://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/how-to-apply/priority-sc-research-areas/#FES
*and
on DIID-D facility at*
https://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/how-to-apply/doe-lab-pocs/.
*For your attention:*
- It is possible for one to have more than one SCGSR award, under
the condition that 1) the accumulative summation of the project periods of
all the awards one has is no more than 12 months, and 2) all the awarded
projects have been completed and required deliverables approved before the
start date of the proposed new project.
Note: Since the minimum project period for a SCGSR project is 3 consecutive
months, you cannot apply for another SCGSR award if you had a SCGSR award
or you are having an on-going SCGSR award that lasts more than 9 months
already.
- Important eligibility requirements relevant to current awardees
or alumni:
o An application whose SCGSR research proposal has the same scope as that
of a previously awarded SCGSR application will not be considered.
Applications built upon past work and focusing on new research developments
that address or further the goals of one of the SCGSR priority areas of the
ongoing solicitation (SCGSR 2018 Solicitation 1) are welcomed.
o If you have any incomplete or overdue SCGSR project deliverables, you
are not eligible to apply to a new solicitation.
o Graduate students who are currently conducting research at a DOE
laboratory *are not* eligible to apply to conduct research at the same DOE
laboratory/facility, but may apply to conduct their graduate thesis
research at a different DOE laboratory/facility.
o Graduate students who have had *a past* research collaboration with a
DOE laboratory scientist may apply for a SCGSR award to conduct part of
their graduate research at that DOE laboratory/facility provided that their
past collaborative research experience at the laboratory/facility was less
than 3 months in duration.
o Graduate students whose thesis advisors are currently funded by The
Office of Science may not be eligible to apply if their current research
grant specifically includes funding for extended travel for graduate
students to do their thesis research at a DOE laboratory/facility.
- Check out FAQ specifically targeted at graduate applicants,
advisors,
and DOE laboratory scientists at
https://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/frequently-asked-questions/.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Best Regards,
Ping Ge, Ph.D.

*Subject:* The DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR)
program is now accepting applications!
Dear Colleagues,
The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science is pleased to announce
that the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is now
accepting applications for the 2018 Solicitation 1.* Applications are due
5:00pm Eastern Time on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. *
Detailed information about the program, including eligibility requirements
and access to the online application system, can be found at:
https://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/.
The SCGSR program supports supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate
students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE
national laboratory/facility in collaboration with a DOE laboratory
scientist for a period of 3 to 12 consecutive months—with the goal of
preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically
important to the DOE Office of Science mission.
The SCGSR program is open to current Ph.D. students in qualified graduate
programs at accredited U.S. academic institutions, who are conducting their
graduate thesis research in targeted areas of importance to the DOE Office
of Science. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate
students’ overall doctoral thesis/dissertation while providing access to
the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the host DOE
laboratories/facilities. The supplemental award provides for additional,
incremental costs for living and travel expenses directly associated with
conducting the SCGSR research project at the DOE host laboratory/facility
during the award period.
The Office of Science expects to make approximately 50 awards in 2018
Solicitation 1 cycle, for project periods beginning anytime between October
29, 2018 and March 4, 2019.
Since its inception in 2014, the SCGSR program has provided support to over
300 graduate awardees from more than 100 different universities to conduct
thesis research at 17 DOE national laboratories across the nation.
The SCGSR program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s
Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS), in
collaboration with the six Office of Science research programs offices and
the DOE national laboratories/facilities, and program administration
support is provided by the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education
(ORISE).
For any questions, please contact the SCGSR Program Manager, Dr. Ping Ge,
at sc.scgsr at science.doe.gov.
