      The Special Tuesday JFI Seminar
   PRESENTS:

"Charge Transport in Nanostructured Artificial Materials Fundamentals
and Applications"

Al-Amin Dhirani

Department of Chemistry

University of Toronto

Abstract

Nanostructures - frequently referred to as “artificial atoms” -
can be viewed as building blocks for "artificial materials". Given
the tremendous choice of nanostructures and material architectures,
such materials can serve as a new test-bed for studying charge
transport - one that is both rich and controllable. A goal of our
research has been to map and understand structure - property
relationships in these materials and to explore applications.

As a prototype system, we have been using nano-building blocks with
very different properties, namely conducting (gold) nanoparticles and
insulating (alkanedithiol) molecular crosslinkers. A goal of this
talk is to provide a survey of the rich range of electrical
behaviours that these materials can exhibit, e.g. single electron
effects, metal-insulator transitions, transistor-like conductance
gating, analog data storage, quantum interference, and chemical
sensing. The talk will highlight both new insights and new
opportunities in charge transport revealed as a direct result of
using nanostructures to fashion materials.
