Abstract:

We report on a simultaneous measurement of the mass of the top quark ( $\mbox{M\ensuremath$_{\mbox{top}}$}$) in the Lepton+Jets and Dilepton channels using $\ensuremath{p\bar{p}}\xspace $ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV from $3.0$ fb $^{-1}$ of data collected with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. In the Lepton+Jets channel, a top quark mass (m \ensuremath{_t^{\mbox{reco}}} ) is reconstructed for every event by minimizing a $\chi^2$-like function to the overconstrained kinematics of the $\ensuremath{t\bar{t}}\xspace $ system. The dijet mass (m \ensuremath{_{\mbox{jj}}} ) of the hadronically decaying W boson is used to constrain in situ the largest systematic on top quark mass measurements, the uncertain jet energy scale ( \ensuremath{\Delta_{\mbox{JES}}}) in the detector. In the underconstrained dilepton channel, the Neutrino Weighting Algorithm (NWA) is used to integrate over the pseudorapdities of the neutrinos and give a single reconstrcted mass per event (M \ensuremath{_t^{\mbox{NWA}}}). In addition, the transverse mass in the two missing particle system $m\ensuremath{_{\mbox{T2}}}$. The values of m \ensuremath{_t^{\mbox{reco}}} and m \ensuremath{_{\mbox{jj}}} for 492 Lepton+Jets candidate events with at least 1 b-tag and the values of M \ensuremath{_t^{\mbox{NWA}}} and \ensuremath{H_{T}} for 219 Dilepton candidate events are compared to two-dimensional probability density function derived by applying kernel density estimation to fully simulated MC events with different values of the top quark mass and \ensuremath{\Delta_{\mbox{JES}}} in the detector. We measure $\mbox{M\ensuremath$_{\mbox{top}}$}= \ensuremath{\ensuremath{172.5 \pm 1.5~\mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 1.1~\mathrm{(syst.)}}~\mathrm{GeV}/c^{2}}$ in the simuntaneus measurement of the Lepton+Jets and Dilepton channels. In addition we measure the top quark mass in the Dilepton channel using one observable $m\ensuremath{_{\mbox{T2}}}$ which is $\mbox{M\ensuremath$_{\mbox{top}}$}= \ensuremath{\ensuremath{167.9~^{+4.8}_{-4.1}~\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm 2.9~\mathrm{(syst.)}}~\mathrm{GeV}/c^{2}}$
