Speaker: Jonathan Rosner (UChicago)
Title: Multiquark states of elementary particles
Abstract: Although quantum chromodynamics permits all possible color-singlet combinations of quarks, only mesons made of a quark and an antiquark, and baryons made of three quarks, had been seen until relatively recently. The key to observing other multiquark mesons and baryons, such as tetraquark mesons and pentaquark baryons, seems to have been the incorporation of heavy quarks (charm, bottom). Their reduced kinetic energy stabilizes bound states containing them. Some advances in multiquark physics will be described, including the successful prediction of the mass of a doubly charmed baryon recently discovered by the LHCb experiment, and the prediction of a tetraquark containing two bottom quarks which is stable with respect to the strong and electromagnetic interactions.
