ACCELERATOR SCIENCE SEMINAR TODAY

Monday October 9, 2017
PRC 201
4:15pm

Speaker: Peter Ostroumov (Michigan State University)

Title: Accelerator Physics in support of FRIB (Facility for Rare Isotope Beams)

Abstract: Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) is being built at Michigan State University (MSU). The facility includes a superconducting (SC) driver linac capable to deliver 400 kW heavy ion beams to the fragmentation target, a fragment separator and a re-accelerator of radioactive beams. The driver linac consist of DC ion sources, a normal conducting Radiofrequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator, 46 cryomodules with 4 types of SC resonators operating at 80.5 and 322 MHz and a charge stripper based on liquid lithium film for stripping of heavy ions at 17 MeV/u. I will discuss basic accelerator physics developments required for the delivery of high power primary beams to the target and also physics of secondary beams including recent beam physics updates and first results of beam commissioning.
