------------------- Directions for running CDF EventDisplay ------------------- Justin Vandenbroucke justinv@cdf.uchicago.edu ------------------------------- Update 5/30/01 -------------------------------- (Peter Onyisi) evd runs fine; to invoke it, first setup cdfsoft2, then run evd filename.root and ignore what it says below about how to load files. It should not be necessary to build your own copy; an executable has already been built in the release directory. --------------------------------- Update 9/20 --------------------------------- evd is not running on our machines. It appears to be a problem with our setup, possibly because we are running RedHat 6.2 and Fermilab is running 6.1. (?) Art Kreymer thinks it could be due to a problem with 6.2 but points out cdfrh0.lha.umich.edu, also running RedHat 6.2, can build and run evd.exe. The version directly from their package as well as one built here gives an undefined symbol error. evd should run remotely on cdfsga.fnal.gov, but at this point it's giving me a segmentation fault. The directions Dmitri gives for building evd such that it must work as long as there is no problem in the configuration of our system are as follows: newrel -t current test [doesn't work, but "newrel - 3.8.0 test" does] cd test addpkg RootEventDisplay addpkg RootMods gmake nobin gmake RootMods.evd Apparently Dmitri is leaving cdf, so he is no longer very helpful, and his replacement for evd has not yet been found. The "module disable CalibrationManager" workaround appears to no longer be necessary. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more info see http://www-cdf.fnal.gov/upgrades/computing/projects/display/EventDisplay.html The author, Dmitri Litvintsev (litvinse@cdfsga.fnal.gov) is very helpful. To run in BASH shell: 1) source ~cdfsoft/cdf2.shrc } 2) setup cdfsoft2 } might want to put both of these in your .bashrc 3) evd.exe 4) AC++ > module disable CalibrationManager [ a bug workaround ] 5) AC++ > root 6) root > read("filename") [in quotes] 7) root > begin(1) A good test file is on cdf at /cdf/data2b/run2mc/evd_test_file.root This is copied from /data62/software/run2/valfiles/isajet_qq_today.root on cdfsga.fnal.gov Files must be in the new format. Don't try to open files from the GUI - you may think you're viewing something new and still be viewing what you specified from the root prompt. There are several different displays that work: CDF, COT, SVX/ISL (doesn't do very much - Dmitri doesn't like it and is rewriting it), and LEGO plots. In most of the windows the View mode allows you to zoom into a rectangle; the Pick mode allows you to rotate the view or click on various objects whose descriptions are then given in the terminal window. You can view monte carlo particle tracks by clicking the MC Particles box. Hide the tracks by right clicking on one and choosing Delete, then clicking OK. The color coding is as follows: muons: green photons: magenta hadrons: blue
