How to Run SPY: CO Instructions What is SPY? and What Does SPY Do? SPY is an Consumer Process which uses analysis control to monitor Level 3 online. Specifically it reads in a representative sample of events which pass Level 2 and performs the following three tasks: 1) Fills and stores histograms with information about the run. (for example: Number of events each L3 node processed) 2) Runs a quick and dirty version of production (i.e, no tracking) on the event and compares to what L3 put in the ybos banks (for example: Did L3 find 10 electrons when production only found 1?) 3) Complains if any of histograms look out of the ordinary. (for example: If one tower in phi has 10 times more jets than any other tower) Starting SPY: 1) Log into B0DC06 as SPY (PASSWORD: SPY_CDF) 2) Type at the B0DC06> prompt SNOOP I.e, B0DC06> SNOOP Note: You MUST do this at the BEGINNING of every run. You will then get a set of standard analysis control messages which you can ignore. Also, a HIGZ window will pop up. Eventually you will get an ANA>> prompt. You can then run SPY in one of three modes: 1) While taking data with the new DAQ 2) While running with the old DAQ 3) Offline with an old .RAW file which is on disk To run with the new DAQ type (at the ANA> prompt): ANA>@SPY_RUN_NEW_DAQ To run with the old DAQ type: ANA>@SPY_RUN_OLD_DAQ noindent To run with an old .RAW file you should type: ANA>@SPY_RUN_FILE In this last case you will be prompted for a file name and to begin analyzing you must type ANA> BEGIN/REPORT=10/PROC. At this point you should start watching the HIGZ window for the pretty slide show we've set up for you. These slides contain histograms of the various Level 3 things which are being monitored. If anything goes wrong, SPY will pop up a NEW HIGZ window with a red or yellow background. Should this happen, you should call the SPY pager at 314 6637 and follow the instructions in the SPY/PHYSMON handbook. Note: You really should read the SPY instructions in SPY/PHYSMON handbook we've worked pretty hard to keep them short and clear. AFTER EVERY RUN you should hit any key to get to the ANA> prompt. Then type ANA>EXIT. This will store all the histograms in a .PAW file for future reference. Unfortunately, closing takes a long time, so be patient. However, once it finishes you are done. Questions regarding SPY can be addressed to: Dave Toback (UCCDF::TOBACK) or Avi Yagil (FNALD::YAGIL). Have Fun...
