Frisch Subject: Abstracts-Infrared Fluorescence of Lead Selenide Colloidal QD Title: Infrared Fluorescence of Lead Selenide Colloidal Quantum Dots Student's Name: Heng Liu Advisor: Philippe Guyot-Sionnest Abstract: There has been progress made in our understanding of the electrical and optical properties of nanocrystal since the first colloidal quantum dots have been prepared. Among various quantum dots, selenides semiconductors have applications of laser materials, optical sensors and so on. Known to be narrow band gap semiconductor, PbSe colloidal quantum dots were found to exhibit a well-defined excitonic structure and have near-unity quantum yield with the wavelength between 1.2 microns and 2 microns with the wavelength being determined by the particle size. Thus PbSe has potential for application of monochromatic infrared light source. A theoretical study indicates an interesting relation between radiative lifetime and temperature, which has not been observed in experiment. In this project, I will: 1. Set up the equipment for fluorescence measurement 2. Observe the dependence of band-edge fluorescence of PbSe on size of the nanocrystal 3. Measure and try to improve the quantum yield of PbSe nanocrystal 4. Find the fluorescence lifetime of PbSe Quantum Dots as a function of temperature. 5. Compare the results to theory. ---- Original message ---- >Date: Fri, 14 Nov 2008 13:56:47 -0600 (CST) >From: "Henry J.
