GENERAL INFORMATION: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY! ___________________ Physics 141 Fall Quarter 2008 H.J.Frisch HEP320 (702-7479) Sept. 29, 2008 OFFICE HOURS: Friday 3-5, or by appointment (2-7479 or arrange after class). Sunday afternoons I'm often in my office- call to check first. You are welcom to come and talk physics. FINDING MY OFFICE: (Please read!!): High Energy Physics 320. Enter through 5620 Ellis Ave, go down stairs, follow red dots on floor (to the right) to the elevator in the basement of HEP. Take elevator to 3rd floor, exit right, HEP320 is the corner office.) REACHING ME: Please phone (2-7479). Email is strongly discouraged, but phone messages will ALWAYS be answered. TEXTS: Required Texts: Kleppner and Kolenkow, An Introduction to Mechanics (McGraw-Hill) Feynman, Lectures on Physics, Vol I (Addison Wesley) Schey, Div, Grad, Curl and All That. (WW Norton) Taylor, An Introduction to Error Analysis Recommended texts: I recommend going to the library and looking at other texts- often one book is very clear on one topic to one person. Ones I often refer to are: Taylor & Wheeler, Spacetime Physics(W.H. Freeman) Marion, Classical Dynamics, Academic Press Symon, Mechanics (Addison Wesley) (Hard!) Ohanian, Physics, (W.W. Norton ) Jeffreys, Cartesian Tensors (Cambridge) PROBLEM SETS: There will be problem set due every Monday. Late solutions will not be accepted. A set of solutions will be posted on the course web site (see below), in Kersten in Rm 101 (first floor), and a set will be in Crerar. The teaching assistants and myself are here to help you if you are having trouble. Please don't get isolated and behind! (come ask questions). WEB PAGE: Problem sets and solutions will be posted on the course web page, at http://hep.uchicago.edu/cdf/frisch/p141/. WORKING TOGETHER: You are strongly encouraged to work in groups- the problem sets will go faster if you discuss the problems, and you will have a much deeper understanding. However, the work you hand in has to be your own- you must NEVER NEVER copy anybody else's work. (as an aside, I recommend reading `Doing Honest Work in College', by Charles Lipson.) QUIZZES: There will usually be a quiz every week. It will cover mostly, but not entirely, the work of the previous week. MIDTERM and FINAL: There will be one midterm, and one final. LABORATORIES: There will be lab weekly starting the THIRD week. The lab assignments are taken care of by Mr. Gazes (Kersten 205). Dept. policy is that you MUST do ALL the labs to be asigned a grade. In addition, you will be penalized by a letter grade for each lab missed (i.e. you miss one lab, highest possible grade is a B). If you are sick and can't attend a lab, please contact me asap. DISCUSSION SESSIONS: The LA's will run discussion sessions. See the web site and the bulletin board in Kersten 101 for anouncements. The lab assistant office hours will be posted soon. GRADES: The final grade will be determined by a mix of the final, the homework, the quizzes, the midterm, and the labs, in that order. The labs, however, will be used to adjust those students close to a boundary between two grades, and consequently often have a big impact. All the labs have to be completed satisfactorily to receive a course grade. The final will count twice the midterm in the course grade, and the quizzes will count approximately the same (8 x 15 minutes/quiz is approximately the same as a 2 hour final, and is twice a 1 hour midterm...). PHYSICS 141/PHYSICS 131 All transfers between 131 and 141 and vice versa must be done before the add/drop date of end of 3rd week. If you are having trouble at the start of 141 I recommend seeing me to discuss transfering asap. OTHER: Please feel free to see me about any physics problems you're having. Scheduling problems (labs, etc.) are best handled by Mr. Gazes. You should get used to asking the LA's and me (and fellow students!) for physics help. (Please remember to phone rather than email- thanks!). GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY HUNTING!
